Houston Gay Pride

While many people think that California is home to the largest gay communities in the country, they might be very surprised to find that Houston has become one of the largest communities in the US. For those that think of Texas as a very conservative and traditional state this often comes as a complete surprise. This year (2010) will make the 32nd Gay Pride celebration and the Gay Pride Festival and Parade. Like most other areas the Houston Gay Pride Festival is a celebration of one of the most important events in the history of the gay and lesbian rights movement. This event was the Stonewall Riots in New York City in June of 1969. This year will be a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the riots and many major world cities will have festivities honoring this momentous event. Among these cities are San Francisco, Toronto, Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago and Seattle.

The Houston Gay Pride Festival is considered to be a very family friendly event that is dedicated to celebrating the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. This is considered to one of the largest Gay Pride events in the Southwest and draws over 50,000 participants each year. While this is a celebration of Houston's diverse community it is one of the few times when most members of the GLBT community can exhibit their sexual preferences without fear of persecution. According to members of the Houston Gay Pride community being ostracized for their sexual preferences is still one of the biggest problems they face. Even today the majority of the heterosexual community is unable or unwilling to accept the fact that a person may be a member of the GLBT community. This forces many gays and lesbians to keep their sexual orientation hidden away from their families and coworkers. This need to hide their sexual can cause severe mental anguish to many members of the Houston Gay Pride community.

If you are new to the city and are looking for resources to help you feel more at home there are several organizations that can help you. Many employers offer services for their GLBT employees and some even have their own Pride groups. You will find a wealth of clubs and activities available for members of the GLBT community. In Houston there is no shortage of places to go and things to do that are all considered gay friendly. You might think that with all of these events and places dedicated to the Houston Gay Pride community there would be plenty of support. However for many this is not enough support and the stresses begin to build up. At this point it might be a good idea to seek help from the Houston Therapist. He is familiar with the GLBT community and offer services aimed at helping members learn to cope with everyday stresses. By taking advantage of the services he has to offer you will find that you can handle all that life has to offer you and once more begin to enjoy your life.
